Everyone has a style that works for them and we all occasionally hit a lull, rut or a bout of writers block. I want to know, what do you do to keep yourself motivated? Do you write when inspiration hits or do you have a set routine? Where do you write? At home, in bed, kitchen table, or a sneaky moment at work? Do you spend hours on your photos? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours ;)
Actually, I figure, I have me some lovely bloggers through this blog and each comes across differently through their blogs, as well as each telling me at one point or other of life getting in the way (been there!). I'm going to share what I do and I'd love it if you commented (or wrote your own post and shared the link) to tell me what you do.

So, how do I blog?
I usually *try* to post Mondays and Thursdays though, that doesn't always happen. Sometimes I have a list of topics sitting in my drafts to prompt me and other times I have something interesting I've done recently I cant wait to share with you. Having a schedule has made me feel guilty if I've missed a post, but also, not having a schedule used to make me lazy and not get anything done at all!
If the post is about something I've done, I usually start with the photos. This takes most of my time, selecting, editing and watermarking my images. I don't always use all of them, it usually depends on what I write. My Holland Park had about 50 photos that were eventually whittled down to 12. How do I write? I tend to get writers block quite a lot. Sometimes I need to leave a post if its not working and go back to it later, find a different angle that interests me and that usually does the trick.

I'm a night owl, most of my posts are written at night, usually with the TV going in the background while I sit on the ground in front of my laptop which, in turn, sits on the coffee table. Other times, when I have writers block, I type up the beginning of a post on my mobile phone, usually on my way to meet friends or something that requires me to hop on a train.
When life gets in the way, it can be hard to get back into the swing of things. I find that reading through some of my favourite blogs tends to help. Failing that, I like walking London for inspiration or doing something new and different that I'd love to write about.
Is there anything else you'd like to know? What do you do?
First off, I want to tell you Sam that I adore your blog, I love the look of it and the feel of it!
ReplyDeleteHow do I blog? You know the minute that I get an idea about a blog, I put it down in my blog journal, I have a journal that keeps me organized about blogging, now before you get this vision in your head about me being super organized, there are literally hundreds of scribbles on the pages!! I jot things down in a hurry, I'll look up some history and take notes, or I'll write down a blogging address I don't want to forget. I follow a lot of blogs, and I always feel like everyone tells a story so much better than I do, I admire so many bloggers and their techniques and making the words just flow... I just blog about things that excite me, things that I want to share with others... and London is truly a great place to get inspiration!
Oh and I have started a blog post on my phone before, but usually it will be on my laptop and I'll add the photos later, but often, I do blog with a particular photo in mind...
Much love to you and I Hope you have a fantastic up coming weekend!
Tammy
Thanks for sharing Tammy. Your right, they key seems to be to get those ideas down before they disappear! And to write what you enjoy of course. I share your envy of other bloggers writing style, still, I suppose its a way to learn and improve.
DeleteI have been so slack lately! I have so much I want to write about but I have been so busy I just don't get a chance to sit down and write. When I do get a night at home, I am so tired I just want to sleep. Argh!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your posts so whenever they come, they are welcome :) Dont worry about life getting in the way, it happens and if you are enjoying yourself, thats all that matters!
DeleteI can't blog without images, unless it's a topic trying to burst out. I have a dedicated desk, and love belting my favourite music as a way to lose myself. I tend to blog on a Sunday evening - it just works for me somehow!
ReplyDeleteAs for writers block, I try & dash of blog outlines when the inspiration strikes & email them to myself to pop into the blog back office for writing properly later. I've also reached a point where dashing out a brief or photos only blog post doesn't phase me - sometimes they're simply my favourites to publish!
Your technique does work well for you, I tend to envy your posts, so well written and fun!
DeleteYes, I cant seem to write without photos too.. The outline of a post is a good tip, it'll help a lot more than just a list of topics. Thanks for sharing!
