I guess I'm a teensy bit behind everyone else when it comes to The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. I haven't read the books, I haven't seen the movies. I'm a Hunger Games virgin. Or so I was till my friend lent me the trilogy...
I started reading book one and slipped right into Katniss's world. Only 26 pages in and I was on the verge of tears. I finished that book in one day. I kid you not. And yeah, I might have teared up again once or twice.

I absolutely love books like this. Books you cannot put down and just know when you reach the end, you'll be bummed its over, but you just cant help yourself anyway. The Hunger Games is like that. And it has substance. It has courage, sacrifice and power struggles. It touches on loss, poverty and morals without being preachy.
Its heroine, Katniss, is a refreshing character, she is tough, independent, honest and endearing. I did find her cluelessness a bit too much to be believable though, even for a 16 year old. But, I cant wait to see how she grows through the remaining two books, Catching Fire and The Mockingjay. Once I'm done with the books, I'm going to check out how Hollywood interpreted it onto the screen. Not sure if i want to see Rue die though.

Anyway, if you haven't read the Hunger Games, take it from me, give it a go. Its not "just a children's book" and I'm sure you will find it a great read. "May the odds be ever in your favor".

I was pretty much like you when I got the first book, I couldn't put it down. I did watch the movie before reading the book though and that was a better way to go perhaps because I didn't feel as disappointed as some other fans with the movie. Glad you liked it. I have yet to watch the second movie actually, but you've reminded me it's on my list. Hope you'll enjoy the other books and the movies!
ReplyDeleteI just devoured the second book in one sitting yesterday and ive started the third. Im not getting much done though! LOL! Im looking forward to seeing the movies too. Did they change the story too much in the movie?
DeleteGreat review! I tore through Hunger Games but only read the next two a year later. I've loved both films but found the second film especially moving.

ReplyDeleteI guess I'm lucky to read a lot of good books! That year my target was 50 books in one year and I just moved on to the next one!
